Unparalleled Dedication to Discovery and Masterful Interpretation of Techniques and Principles

The author expresses great joy at karate’s inclusion as an official event in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021), recognizing it as a major milestone in its global recognition. However, karate had already achieved widespread popularity, with approximately 130 million practitioners worldwide. As a Japanese martial art, its international spread is a source of pride.

The author began practicing Wado-ryu at age 13 and later transitioned to Shotokan-ryu. After university, he joined the Japan Karate Association (JKA) as a trainee and later became an instructor. Through his journey, he trained in various kumite formats, including JKA’s ippon-shobu, the now-defunct sanbon-shobu, and protector kumite.

Spending more than half the year abroad teaching karate, the author experienced firsthand how many foreign practitioners are drawn not just to the sport aspect but to karate-do-the spiritual and philosophical path of traditional Japanese martial arts. Their deep interest in kata and commitment to long-term practice greatly inspired him.

His perspective further expanded through his role in a martial arts film, which offered real-world insight into combat beyond dojo training. In recent years, he has also engaged with instructors of other karate styles and Chinese martial arts, enriching his understanding and continuing his personal development.

Now at 58, the author remains devoted to daily training and research, believing that lifelong growth is the essence of Japanese budo. His personal motto, “”Learn, Train, and Grow to Be Better,”” reflects his commitment and approach to teaching.

Through this book, he hopes to share the beauty and depth of karate rooted in Japanese tradition and to create a path of growth and exchange that transcends borders and generations.
